South Florida students compete at Essentially Ellington 2011

By Tatiana Hernandez, Knight Foundation

Two South Florida schools were selected to compete at the 16th Annual Essentially Ellington High School Jazz Band Competition and Festival in New York City. The two-day event runs Friday, May 13 – Saturday, May 14th.

Our own Dillard High School and New World School of the Arts are among the 15 finalists. The bands will compete and participate in workshops, jam sessions, and more. The three top-placing bands perform with Artistic Director of Jazz at Lincoln Center, Wynton Marsalis, as guest soloist, followed by a performance by the 15-piece Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra whose members serve as mentors for the finalist bands throughout the weekend. The Festival’s finale is an awards ceremony honoring outstanding soloists, sections and the top three bands. Last year, Dillard High School placed 2nd in the competition. We’re hoping one of our South Florida bands will take the crown this year!

Knight Foundation provided support for Dillard High and New World students to attend the event. We are very proud of these two bands and look forward to watching the live webstream tomorrow at 10 am (Dillard) and 1 pm (New World). Join us!
