The Red Thread weaves a big community impact

Last fall the PlayGround Theatre received a $100,000 Knight Arts Challenge grant to produce the world premiere of The Red Thread, a children’s play based on an ancient folktale and designed to foster an understanding of Chinese culture. An estimated 16,000 children, teachers, family members and others will make up the audiences for 62 performances of The Red Thread, playing at the Miami Shores theater through May 27. Knight Foundation’s national program director Damien Thorman was among the 16,000, joined by his wife and six-year-old daughter, who was particularly impacted by the performance. Thorman’s wife writes:

“We thoroughly enjoyed every minute of the Red Thread on Sunday. On tuesday our 6 year old daughter was working on a particularly hard math problem. She spontaneously got up, sat on the floor in the lotus position, closed her eyes and quietly said ‘Envision the Solution. Envision the Solution.’ – just like the heroine in the play learned to quiet her mind through meditation to figure out the best path forward. She then jumped up, came back to the table and solved her math problem! It was beautiful to see how she integrated what she learned from the arts so quickly into her own life. Big thanks to the Playground for the wonderful gift they give the community through their amazing shows!”
