The University of Miami Frost School of Music’s Henry Mancini Institute Orchestra was televised May 12, 2011 on WPBT2’s premiere broadcast of An Evening with Dave Grusin, (also available on CD, Blu-ray Disc and ROBA iPad App), a groundbreaking live program that captures 10 time Grammy Award-winning and Academy Award-winning composer and pianist Dave Grusin performing with a host of stars at the Adrienne Arsht Center in Miami.  The program was originally presented as part of the 2009 JAZZ ROOTS: a Larry Rosen Jazz Series.

The Henry Mancini Institute was awarded $500,000 by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation in conjunction with the 2010 Knight Arts Challenge, to produce “HMI: Outbound,” a new community outreach program to engender a new cultural niche in South Florida and present new programming that merges classical, jazz, world and pop music to create new musical outcomes.

The televised program featured music from some of Dave Grusin’s most enduring film scores of the past half-century including On Golden Pond, Tootsie, The Fabulous Baker Boys, and Goonies, Additionally, the concert celebrated the music of great American composer George Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess, Henry Mancini’s Moon River and Leonard Bernstein’s music for the Broadway hit, West Side Story. Dave Grusin and the Henry Mancini Institute Orchestra were joined by guest artists: Patti Austin, Jon Secada, Monica Mancini, Gary Burton, Arturo Sandoval, Nestor Torres and Sammy Figueroa.
