You’ve got film!

In another sign of Miami’s emergence as a cultural beachhead, it suddenly has 5, count’em, 5 independent cinemas!  In the last few months the community has seen the Knight-funded O’Cinema open in Wynwood, Miami Beach Cinematheque reopen in their brand new home in old City Hall and Coral Gables Cinematheque open in its new facility across from Books & Books on Aragon.  In addition the Tower Theater on Calle Ocho continues to program strong independent work from across the world with a focus on Latin America.  And the Cosford Cinema continues its long tradition of independent cinema on the University of Miami campus.

Recently, these five trail blazing art houses are joining together to make sure Miamian’s can find out where to feed their subtitle jones.  Starting this Friday and every Friday for the next year you’ll be able to find out what each of them are showing in a cooperative advertisement in the weekend section of the Miami Herald and El Nuevo Herald.

With the assistance of Knight Foundation, Miami Herald and El Nuevo Herald, the five independent cinemas have joined together to help fund the ad, to provide one stop shopping for Miami cineistas.  We congratulate them on their collaboration.  Now If I could only get each of them to stock Dots candy at their respective concession stands!

We’d be interested in hearing from some of the other artistic disciplines in town if a joint ad in the same place each week might be beneficial to their audience and their box office.  Theater folks?  Dance companies?  Others?  What do you think? Comment below & let us know
