Prepping for Marshland Security

By Meranda Stuart, Matrix Theatre

For the past few weeks, Matrix Theatre’s puppet department has focused on the fundraising, production and performance of its original show: Marshland Security. Marshland Security focuses on the current landscape of Detroit and features local Detroit teens. The story follows Dante the frog and his journey into the city of Detroit. The play chronicles Dante’s resolve to unite all inhabitants of the city in efforts to rejuvenate Detroit.

To raise money for the production of Marshland Security, Matrix Theatre hosted a New Orleans Inspired Frog Masquerade at the Magic Stick Lounge on August 5. Performances included appearances from Zachariah Griffith, Paper Cut Queens, Petal Shoppe, Bride Stripped Bear and Mayonnaise Graveyard. Performers from the Detroit Fire Guild as well as Fly-house filled the space with glowing hula-hoops. Joshua Wilde provided magic. We also had a tarot card reader and a fortune teller. The night was a success and we raised enough for the production of Marshland Security.

On August 20th Marshland Security made its debut at a family oriented mini-festival at the Gazebo across from Matrix. The area was filled with puppet stations, a mask making table, as well as light refreshments. Marshland Security showed twice for family and guests who attended the event.

Marshland Security will perform at 3pm at the People’s Art Festival at the Russell Industrial Center on Saturday September 27th and then will travel to Royal Oak to perform at the Arts, Beats and Eats Festival on Saturday September 3rd at 2:00pm.
