Unique community arts project at Miami Dade College’s Freedom Tower

By Sue Arrowsmith, Miami Dade College Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Art Gallery System and MDC Live! Performing Arts Series, in collaboration with Diaspora Vibe Cultural Arts Incubator, present MILAGROS: Portal Culture, an intensive community arts project, performance and exhibition. The project will run from June 26 through July 27 at MDC’s Freedom Tower in downtown Miami. All events are free and open to the public.

There will be an opening reception on Thursday, June 28, at 6 p.m., with a performance by musicians from Elestial Sounds Records at 7 p.m. An Artist’s Lecture & Presentation will be held on Friday, June 29, at 1 p.m.

MILAGROS Project is a Florida-based artist collective, including Felici Asteinza, Alvin Fillastre, Evan Galbicka, and Elestial Sounds, who construct site-specific installations that integrate visual, performance, music, and participatory arts. For the visual component, they will begin building an installation at the Freedom Tower on June 26, and will remain on display through July 27.

The artists will be in residence the week of June 25 to begin building the installation and presenting community workshops on June 26. Visitors are welcomed to drop in as the installation is being built during gallery hours.
