It’s that time of year again, and Knight Foundation is headed to Austin, Texas, for South by Southwest. This year, we have a terrific lineup of events to showcase our current News Challenge and to celebrate our partnerships.

Knight News Challenge open office hours

Swing by The Driskill Hotel bar to chat with us about the Knight News Challenge on Elections. This round, we are offering a share of $3 million for the best nonpartisan ideas that answer the question: How might we better inform voters and increase civic participation before, during and after elections? Stop by with your questions and great ideas.

Knight Foundation County Fair

Stop by the Palm Door for a good ol’ county fair and kick back with some food, drinks, music from Sour Bridges and carnival-style games from Two Bit Circus. At 1 p.m., Evan Smith, CEO of The Texas Tribune, will interview Washington Post Executive Editor Marty Baron. Also, you can learn more about our News Challenge from past winners and Knight staff, including Journalism VP Jennifer Preston, Journalism Director Shazna Nessa, Media Innovation VP John Bracken and Media Innovation Director Chris Barr. You will also be able to learn about other funding, such as the Knight Prototype Fund, the Knight Enterprise Fund, and to connect with other members of our network, such as the staff from The Texas Tribune. Throughout the day, the following grantees will have demo stations to share what they’ve been working on:

A Tribute to David Carr, including a screening of “Page One: Inside The New York Times,” followed by a conversation with CNN’s Brian Stelter and R.B. Brenner, director of the University of Texas School of Journalism

Join us in remembering David Carr, the New York Times media columnist who brought together veteran journalists and digital media upstarts at SXSW. After the screening, Brian Stelter, host of CNN’s “Reliable Sources,” will talk with R.B. Brenner about the impact Carr made on so many people and on the future of journalism.
