New events combine Miami’s love for sports with technology

The newest events on the Miami tech scene, Tech Weekend @ The Dolphins and Tech Networking @ The Dolphins combine South Florida’s passion for sports with its rapidly growing tech scene. These sports-themed gatherings allow local software and IT enthusiasts access to insights from Dolphins IT staff and Sun Life Stadium facilities to learn, network and share ideas. They will also add another layer to Miami’s increasingly diverse idea ecosystem, allowing participants the chance to explore how technology can leverage and enhance Miami’s great love for sports. The events are supported by Knight Foundation, as well as the Dolphins.

The first of these, Tech Weekend @ The Dolphins will kick off this week on Oct. 25, bringing together sports, technology and entrepreneurship. Included in the program are tech meetups at Sun Life Stadium and professional training sessions on IT and coding. A teach-a-thon event will also introduce local high school students to HTML web design and game development, as a way to engage them in idea-building.

The event will further host The Fin Tank, a special hackathon, in which developers will work to create apps that have the possibility of changing the in-stadium sporting experience. Participants will then get the chance to present concepts and ideas to Miami Dolphins IT experts and potential investors from Citrix Venture Capital Group.

Creating new and inventive solutions is at the heart of Miami’s growing technology and innovation culture—and these new events are being planned with that spirit in mind. Through the events we also hope to build bridges between the sports world and the vibrant tech community that is developing in Miami. By bringing together major players in sports tech and investors with budding entrepreneurs, the events will seed new connections and collaborations.

Tech Weekend will begin with a keynote from Tery Howard, chief technology officer for the Miami Dolphins, who will talk about tech’s role in the new plans to overhaul Sun Life Stadium. To add another major player in Miami’s idea ecosystem to the mix, the first day will end with a networking event led by South Florida’s biggest meetup group for entrepreneurs, Refresh Miami. Server experts, web designers, mobile app developers and venture capitalists are all invited to exchange ideas and find partners in building the next great innovation in sports-tech.

Hundreds of tickets to the Nov. 13 Miami Dolphins vs. Buffalo Bills game will also be awarded during Tech Weekend; sponsors will present various opportunities for participants to win tickets.  These winners will then regroup to watch the game and continue the idea sharing at the Tech Networking @ The Dolphins event on the same day.
