Theater of the people, by the people, for the people

By Teatro del Pueblo staff Teatro del Pueblo is once again partnering with the West Side Theater Project to bring a community-based musical to the West Side neighborhood of St. Paul. Throughout the year, Teatro del Pueblo’s Executive Director, Alberto Justiniano gathered stories through story circles and created an original libretto. In collaboration with Harry Waters, Director, and Becky Dale, Composer, they have created an original piece that speaks directly to the history, demographics and community pride in the neighborhood in which Teatro del Pueblo has been based for the last 20 years. The concept is based on Los Angeles’ Cornerstone Theater Institute methods where community members help in all aspects of creating the story. The project brings a number of professional actors and artists to work with community members to bring the script to life. Open Auditions were held on July 23 and 24 at the Baker Community Center and El Rio Visto Rec Center. The musical, “Once Upon A River” will open September 14th through the 23rd.
