Knight Foundation’s Grants Administration team oversees and continuously improves the foundation’s grant making process and systems. Finance plans, manages, and forecasts the foundation’s financial resrouces, supporting budgeting and long-term financial planning in partnership with program and operational teams. We are seeking an individual with an interest in technical support, finance, data analysis and management.

As the Data Analyst supporting the Grants Administration and Finance teams, you will report to our Manager of Grants Administration.

Key responsibilities:

• Translates financial data into clear, decision-relevant insights that support programmatic and operational strategy, including identifying trends, interpreting results, and making actionable recommendations
• Ensures the quality, integrity, and accuracy of grant data across grant, accounting, and finance platforms
• Supports responsible fiduciary stewardship of grants, grant-related financial structures, and endowments
• In partnership with program staff, supports the grant payment decisions based on timely and relevant financial data
• Contributes to process improvements by identifying issues and suggesting solutions

Knight Foundation is seeking a community-rooted Senior Program Officer to work alongside residents, grantees, civic leaders, public agencies and funders to support local ideas and connect resources, relationships and ideas to action. Based in Miami, this role presents an opportunity to help shape how Knight’s investments drive lasting, transformational change across four Knight communities in Florida. As Senior Program Officer, you will engage questions central to the conditions that allow communities to thrive and support Knight’s vision to be the leading catalyst of scalable solutions that strengthen the information ecosystem, economic mobility and cultural vibrancy.

What This Role Is

Focused on Knight’s Florida portfolio of communities including Miami, West Palm Beach, Bradenton and Tallahassee, you will translate strategic direction into clear plans, priorities and execution across significant areas of the portfolio. You will bring sound judgment and field awareness to grantmaking and partnerships, coordinate across colleagues and functions, and keep mission, operations and learning connected.

You will support the deployment of Knight’s capital in three ways: financial capital through grantmaking and strategic investments; knowledge capital through learning, synthesis and sharing insights; and social capital through convening, connecting people and strengthening networks. Success means strengthening the Community Impact portfolio in Florida while contributing to the broader coordination, visibility, learning and effectiveness of Knight’s work.

What You Will Do

• Active management of the grants portfolios for Miami, West Palm Beach, Bradenton and Tallahassee, including budgets, outcome measurements, reporting and follow through.
• Work with increasing independence, bringing a clear point of view to recommendations and decisions within your scope and elevating significant risks, tradeoffs and opportunities to program leadership.
• Conduct and contribute to rigorous due diligence, assessing strategic fit, organizational health, financial information, risks and tradeoffs for potential impact.
• Establish and monitor clear outcome goals across grants and initiatives, identify patterns and risks, and use evidence and partner input to refine the work.
• Contribute to knowledge sharing, field learning and practices that improve effectiveness and impact.
• Build constructive, respectful relationships with grantees, residents, practitioners, community leaders, public agencies, funders and other partners across Miami’s civic ecosystem, contributing insight and perspectives that strengthen the foundation’s work and presence in the field.
• Represent Knight in field engagement, in coordination with program leadership, and contribute to learning and visibility around the foundation’s work.

About the role:

The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation is seeking an exceptional writer with strong editorial judgment and project management skills to join our communications team and help shape how the foundation is understood in the press and public discourse. As communications officer, you will partner with the director of communications to support the delivery of clear, timely and consequential communications across the foundation’s work, and amplify the voice of one of the nation’s leading champions of the First Amendment, a free press and democracy.

This is a hands-on role for a thoughtful, highly organized professional who can move between strategy and execution. You will work across Knight’s grantmaking portfolio in journalism, research, the arts and community impact to identify stories and translate complex ideas, research findings, grantmaking and convenings into compelling materials for journalists, partners and the public.

Knight holds itself to high editorial standards and journalistic integrity. This role carries that into how we talk about our mission to ignite in every person the power to shape thriving communities. Ideal candidates will have strong command of AP style, experience in communications, media relations or journalism and a deep understanding of the media landscape and the narratives shaping public conversation and civic discourse today.

You will work closely with Knight’s director of communications, within the communications function led by our vice president of communications and digital strategy. The role sits in our Miami headquarters.

You are an ideal candidate if:

You understand the essential role of the First Amendment in a democracy. You’re organized, respect deadlines, have or are willing to build relationships with reporters and influencers, and have experience managing vendors and editing writers. You own your areas of responsibility, work with growing independence, spot risks early and know when to escalate. You keep pace when priorities shift, and you do your best work on a small team.

Key responsibilities:

• Media relations: Support the director of communications in building and maintaining working relationships with journalists, editors, thought leaders, influencers and outlets. Pitch stories, field inquiries, coordinate staff interviews and help secure accurate, timely coverage of Knight’s work.
• Writing and message development: Draft press releases, statements, op-eds, talking points and briefing memos that hold to the foundation’s external narrative and voice. Keep internal message houses, data repositories and grantmaking dollar amounts up to date.
• Leadership and spokesperson support: Prepare materials to equip leadership and program staff for media interviews, public appearances and high-stakes conversations, including background research, Q&A and briefing materials.
• Monitoring and insight: Track media coverage and perceptions of the foundation to inform how to position Knight’s work in public conversation, backed by performance data.
• Vendors and project management: Work with external communications vendors across public relations, speechwriting and event production. Edit and manage freelance writers for Knight’s owned editorial content.
• Convenings: Support program development, talking-points, event communications, including invitations and relationships with peer funders, grantees, high-profile guests and the press before, during and after events. Partner with the convenings project manager, who leads logistics and execution, and with the marketing and creative team on brand and creative. Expect hands-on support onsite, with occasional evenings, weekends and travel.
• Cross-functional partnership: Keep communications, marketing, convenings and program teams in step so media, campaign and field engagement line up.

Things we look for in a successful candidate:

• Experience in media relations, communications or journalism, with a track record of owning defined areas of work with increasing independence.
• Exceptional writing and editing on deadline, with command of AP style.
• Strong news judgment and demonstrated media relations results or reported work: pitches placed, reporter relationships built and coverage earned.
• Sound judgment and discretion with sensitive, embargoed or high-profile information and the instinct to escalate issues appropriately.
• Comfort supporting live events, including preproduction and hands-on execution on site.
• Commitment to Knight’s mission and interest in free expression, thriving communities and our focus areas: Information Ecosystems, Economic Mobility and Cultural Vibrancy.
• Preferred but not required:
  • Journalism experience, or non-profit communications experience.
  • Familiarity with media monitoring and coverage analysis tools.
  • Proficiency with a leading content management system (e.g., WordPress) and email marketing platforms such as Mailchimp and RSVPify.
  • Experience with project management tools such as Monday, Asana and Airtable.
  • Adobe Creative Suite skills.
  • Experience with or openness to using artificial intelligence to streamline processes and increase efficiency.
