Sounding Room: community through collaboration at Locust Projects

Subvert expectations. Create community. That’s the heart of “Sounding Room,” a collaborative installation and impromptu composition of audio sculptures divined by artists Felecia Chizuko Carlisle and Valerie George. The project–also described as “an adaptable platform for aural experimentation”–is currently on display at Locust Projects through April 18th.

Carlisle and George invited eight interdisciplinary artists from both coasts to contribute to the project via a live performance. The artists will then leave traces of their performances, creating an archive of artifacts that could range from piano strings to drum heads.

On Saturday, March 21 at 7:30 p.m., artists Daren Kendall and Eli Lehroff will “activate”–i.e., perform in–the space. The artists will use amplified noise that will be coaxed and remixed to create a live improvisational soundtrack. They will be accompanied by Al Torres, a low rider driver from Red’s Miami.

Visitors are invited to attend, interact, experiment and help shape the space with their own impromptu compositions.

“Sounding Room” is on display through March 18th at Locust Projects, 3852 N. Miami Ave., Miami; 305-576-8570; www.locustprojects.org. This weekend’s performance is scheduled for Saturday, March 21 at 7:30 p.m., and there will be a final performance on Saturday, April 18th. Admission is free and open to the public.
