This week is all about memory and a canoe with new works by Miami choreographers Heather Maloney and Pioneer Winter.

First up, choreographer Maloney, in collaboration with dancers Joanne Barrett and Shaneeka Harell, will premiere “In This Place,” a new multidisciplinary performance described as physical theater that uses memory and the recollection of them as the reservoir for this performance.

“It’s a non-linear narrative,” says Maloney, “that is woven from the reassembly of first memories as artifacts lost and found in the body. “In This Place” opens a window into the extraordinary action of memory staged in the body.” These Rolodex of memories, however, have to come out and find expression in the tangible world.

“In This Place,” sponsored by FUNDarte, a previous Knight Arts grantee, runs at On.Stage Black.Box Theater at the Miami-Dade County Auditorium, 2901 W. After you see “In This Place,” head over to the Deering Estate at Cutler on Feb. 18 for Pioneer Winter’s “Ebb/Flow,” a site-specific work created for the SoBay Festival of the Arts. Along with dancer Marissa Nick, the two will perform in and around a floating canoe set in Biscayne Bay.

“I am a young choreographer,” says Winter, “my experiences are not the same as my cohorts — but relationships are something you build upon from birth. Who better to represent a romantic, turbulent, sometimes comedic experience than someone who is still riding that wave?”

The two will engage in a tumultuous tussle that tests their balance and aquatic (relationship) skills all while trying to maintain their composure. The dance fight, an obvious metaphor for the ebb and flow many couples go through, ends with an unsteady truce. A truce that may (or may not) be the foundation for a sustained and functional relationship.
