Everyone carries a shadow

Marissa Alma Nick dares you to show your face and follow (or un-follow) your shadow to “The Shadow Projects,” a site-specific experimental performance inspired by Carl Jung’s shadow theory. Jung’s shadow theory posits the idea that the shadow contains “the disowned qualities of the consciousself.” In other words, the stuff — constructive and destructive — we would rather not face. The performance will run during Art Basel at the “Lot” at 2601 N.W. Second Ave. on Friday, Dec. 2 and Saturday, Dec. 3 at 8 p.m.

The idea for “The Shadow Project” emerged during a conversation Nick had with fellow artist and painter Reinier Gamboa at the witching hour during the full moon five months ago. She said they spent the whole time talking about their fears and how much they avoid facing them on their way home. Inspired, “we decided to drive back [to the studio] and paint me black on the rooftop of the Flagler Art Space. We talked about our darkest fears and experiences, and that’s what inspired the movement of my body.”

The movement of the body and the face-to-face confrontation with the subconscious mind is what “The Shadow Project” is about. The performance, a multidisciplinary artistic exploration of the body, in collaboration with Pioneer Winter (dancer and choreographer), challenges the audience to embody their own shadow. In stark contrast, Nick (painted black) and Winter (painted white) will embody the two sides of the whole, the dark and the light, the destructive and constructive forces that conspire to make us who we are or who we imagine ourselves to be.

“The Shadow Projects” is visually and sonically stunning. It’s also a fun way to learn about Jungian theory. The performance will also include live painting by Ella Raphaelle Dufrene and live music by Bill Le Dusthead. “Everyone carries a shadow,” Jung wrote. “And the less it is embodied in the individual’s conscious life, the blacker and denser it is.”

“The Shadow Projects,” is free and open to the public, Friday, Dec. 2 and Saturday, Dec. 3 at 8 p.m. at the lot of 2601 N.W. Second Ave. *Friday night expect a special guest appearance by Jam Lasting Mountains.
