Arts

Closing out summer with Gene Hackman, Borscht, Markus Gottschlich and “Cirque Éloize iD”

Summer is almost over, but the arts are eternal. Even though the kids are going back to school and hurricane Irene is packing up and shimmying up the coast, the performing arts scene in Miami is still chugging along with an array of events for everyone.

“Cirque Éloize iD,” which runs for two more weeks at the Arsht Center, is a fun show packed with energy, grit and charisma that will keep your eyes entertained and heart pumping. The show is a modern circus that features hand-to-hand acrobatics, out-of-this world contortion, in-line skating, hip-hop, modern dance, break dance and the Cyr wheel. This show is a blast for teens and young adults and, to be honest, for people of all ages. “Cirque Éloize iD” runs through Sunday, Sept. 4, 2011. For tickets, visit http://www.arshtcenter.org/tickets/calendar/view.aspx?id=9485.

This Friday, Aug. 26 at 8 p.m. Jazz at MOCA returns with Austrian-born jazz pianist Markus Gottschlich, whose performances are a musical discourse in human thought and emotions. Jazz at MOCA is free rain or shine, so take that hurricane Irene. If you can’t make it to Jazz at MOCA, don’t worry. On Saturday, Aug. 27, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., the Optic Nerve Film Festival opens and will feature 18 films by 15 local and national artists. For information on upcoming events at the Museum of Contemporary Art, a Knight Arts grantee, visit http://www.mocanomi.org/events.

And, if you missed the Borscht Film Festival, also a Knight Arts grantee, early this year, you can still get some Borsht tonight, Aug. 25, 2011 at 10 p.m. with an encore screening of 23 original short films by Miami filmmakers Barry Jenkins, Waverly Films, Jillian Mayer, Fro Rojas, Franco Parente and many more. For more information about the re-running of the festival, visit http://www.o-cinema.org/2011/08/borscht-film-festival-the-encore/.

Finally, there’s always Gene Hackman, not the Gene Hackman, but the Gene Hackman that is the writer’s residency housed at Bas Fisher Invitational. Co-currently, Timothy Stanley (novelist) and P. Scott Cunningham (poet) are in residence at Gene Hackman. If you’re available, the two give daily performances, or readings from the work, at 5 p.m. There are also Saturday performance readings scheduled for Aug. 27 at 2 p.m., Sept. 3 at 2 p.m., and Sept. 10 at 8 p.m. For more information about Gene Hackman, visit here.

Enjoy.
