Alejandro de Onís joined Knight Foundation in January 2015.

De Onís is a creative digital strategist with over 15 years of experience in marketing and communications for nonprofits and media organizations. His expertise lies in brand management, reactive digital strategy and media campaigns. He has worked on projects addressing climate change, technology and democracy, the First Amendment and human rights in Latin America, in close collaboration with institutions such as PBS, A&E, Discovery Channel, Ford Foundation, MacArthur Foundation, and Omidyar Network, in addition to the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.

At Knight, de Onís’s focus is on the marketing and communications of the foundation’s brand, ensuring its tenets serve the overall vision of the foundation as well as adjust to changing conditions of the market, as necessary. He works with Knight’s executive leadership to help define the foundation’s continually evolving communications goals and assembles and leads a wide range of collaborative partners, including creative agencies, marketing/PR firms, developers and manufacturers to deliver successful campaigns to that end. He contributes to Knight’s research and programmatic work through creative direction, media engagement and digital content strategy for its diverse national and local audiences.

De Onís is the former director of digital strategy for the documentary production company Skylight Pictures. In that role, he increased social impact and audience engagement with platforms that facilitate users’ involvement with social issues. De Onís has also worked on various programs for PBS, A&E, Discovery Channel, and National Geographic.
