Art Basel Miami Beach 2009
Art comes down like an avalanche during Basel week, and some of the best quality from all the world over can be found at the Miami Beach Convention Center proper. But let’s face it, the purpose of art fairs is to sell work, and sell it in bulk. Fair booths tend to rob work of their context and art fairs in general simply cannot provide the same experience galleries and museums do. But luckily, hopping from booth to booth of the fair’s 180 plus participating galleries is never the only worthwhile activity at Art Basel.
This year’s Art Kabinett features 28 independently curated exhibitions of solo and group shows by different galleries, and you’ll find showings by emerging artists but also historical heavy hitters like Marcel Duchamp, George Grosz and Jack Tworkov, not to mention projects by Olafur Eliasson, Anish Kapoor, Richard Prince and Wim Delvoye.
The Art Nova section of the fair contains new works produced in the last two yeas by 68 emerging and established international galleries, with no more than a maximum of three artists per gallery showing at a time.
Art Positions, previously exhibited at Collins Park, this year moves to the center of the Convention Center, with 23 young galleries showcasing cutting edge projects by single artists or conceptual group shows.
And step outside the Convention Center for Art Projects, curated by Patrick Charpenel of Guadalajara, Mexico. These public and challenging situational based projects includes an array of internationally renowned artists such as Santiago Sierra, Claire Fontaine, William Pope.L, Rirkrit Tiravanija, Franz West, not to mention Miami’s own Cristina Lei Rodriguez.
