Do You Haiku?
The Knight Foundation and the University of Wynwood are pleased to announce their inaugural Haiku Contest. Beginning Nov. 1, we’ll begin accepting entries from all members of the Miami community via KnightArts.org.
Traditionally, haiku is a Japanese verse form invoking the natural world, but we’re looking for a haiku that addresses a much more localized topic – the Miami-Dade County Commission’s review of public arts funding. Feel free to be as political and provocative as you like – no limits. We have three goals – to provide a canvas of opinions of the arts in Miami; to promote creativity; & to create a fun, interactive medium for public expression.
Submit one haiku each time you enter.
- Submission Period: Nov. 1, 2009 to Nov. 21, 2009
- Theme: Miami-Dade County Commission’s recent arts funding discussion
- Eligible Applicants: Miami-Dade residents, no previous haiku experience
- Prizes: 1st prize is $500, 2nd is $250 and five others will receive honorable mention and $100
Rules: All haiku should be in the traditional format of 5-7-5: 5 syllables for the first line, 7 forthe second and 5 for the third. Rhyme is NOT a requirement. Submit as many as you like, as many times as you like (with each haiku entered separately). All entries will be reviewed by a blind panel of judges.
