A look ahead: Knight-supported events in South Florida

There is a terrific lineup of Knight-supported events coming up in the next month in South Florida. In addition to the diverse mix of events below, don’t forget that the deadline to submit your ideas for the $5 million Knight Cities Challenge is Friday, Nov. 14, at 5 p.m. ET. We want your best ideas to make cities more successful.
Also, be sure vote for the South Florida Knight Arts Challenge People’s Choice Award by Nov. 17. Voting closes at 11:59 p.m. ET. Here are some of the other events ahead:
- Nov. 10, 17, 24 and Dec. 1: Code for Miami will hold its weekly Civic Hack Night at The LAB Miami.
- Nov. 11: Startup Grind Miami presents an interview with Jose Li, founder of 71lbs.com, which aims to democratize shipping and logistics for small businesses.
- Nov. 12, 19, 26 and Dec. 3: #WaffleWednesday will hold its weekly tech and creatives morning meet-up in Wynwood.
- Nov. 16-23: The Miami Book Fair International features the new Knight-sponsored Swamp, a space for all things Florida; a children’s theater festival; and an evening with the National Book Award winners. I’ll be doing a live talk with author Steven Johnson, who has a new PBS series on the history of innovation, “How We Got to Know” (Nov. 22). Miami entrepreneurs Denise Jacobs and Felecia Hatcher will also appear on a panel about “Entrepreneurship in the Age of Tech” (Nov. 23). The full schedule is here; follow #mbfi for updates.
- Nov. 17: Code Fever presents the Global Entrepreneurship Week Game Changers Panel featuring discussions with startup founders who are changing the game in their industry.
- Nov. 19: Tech Cocktail’s Miami Sessions presents StyleSeats co-founder Melody McCloskey.
- Nov. 21: Knight hosts its bimonthly free breakfast event, Meet Knight Foundation Miami; participants can learn about our Miami work and provide feedback.
- Dec. 1-2: SIME MIA returns for its second year with speakers including Martin Varsafsky, founder of FON; Paul Walborsky, CEO of Gigaom; and Jimmy Maymann, CEO of Huffington Post, among many others.
- Dec. 11-12: WeXchange 2014 presents its annual forum focused on unlocking the potential of high-growth women entrepreneurs in Latin America and the Caribbean, including a keynote by Endeavor CEO and co-founder Linda Rottenberg.
- Dec. 11: Brainfood @ The LAB presents Mark Kingdon, a veteran tech CEO, founder and active early-stage investor, whose investments include Twitter, Fab.com, Refinery29, as well as SKTCHY and Everypost in Miami.
