Miami events connect thriving community of makers, artists and entrepreneurs

It’s difficult to believe that January is nearly gone. We have a terrific lineup of events supported by Knight Foundation for the remainder of this month and next month too. I want to especially mention that Knight Arts Challenge South Florida is now open for you to submit your arts ideas. The deadline is Feb. 23. Come help us kick off the challenge during a party tonight at Gramps in Wynwood.

Here’s a look at what else lies ahead:

  • Jan. 27: The Idea Center at Miami Dade College presents Senzari co-founder Demian Bellumio as part of its Pioneers @ MDC monthly series. 

  • Jan. 28: Accelerated Growth Partners will launch the first of six free angel investor education workshops focused on teaching the intricacies of investing in early-stage entrepreneurs. 

  • Jan. 28, Feb. 4, Feb. 11, Feb. 18, Feb. 25: Live Ninja holds #WaffleWednesday, its weekly tech and creatives morning meet-up in Wynwood. 

  • Jan. 28: The Idea Center at Miami Dade College presents “Dawn of the Apps,” a talk on mobile app development by Charles Irizarry, chief product architect at Rokk3r Labs. 

  • Jan. 28: MIT Enterprise Forum of South Florida presents “A Smooth Ride for Green Cars!” at Venture Hive. 

  • Jan. 29-30: Florida Venture Forum presents its Florida Venture Capital Conference in Hollywood with entrepreneurs and investors from across the region and state. I will give a lunchtime talk on Thursday, followed by an interview with entrepreneur Maurice Ferre Jr. 

  • Jan. 29: Refresh Miami presents “The Future of Healthcare” for its monthly meet-up with speakers from CareCloud, Modernizing Medicine and Miami Children’s Hospital.

  • Jan. 31: MIAMade Maker Saturdays with Juan Erman Gonzalez on “The Art of Paper-Cutting” at The LAB Miami. 

  • Feb. 2: Knight Arts Challenge Community Q&A, 7 p.m., ArtSouth, South Miami Community Center, 5800 SW 66th St., South Miami.

  • Feb. 3: Knight Arts Challenge Community Q&A, 7 p.m., The Projects at FATVillage, 523 NW First Ave., Fort Lauderdale.

  • Feb. 4: Knight Arts Challenge Community Q&A, 7 p.m., Cannonball, 1035 N. Miami Ave., No. 300, Downtown Miami.

  • Feb. 4: Miami Finance Forum presents “Mapping Miami’s Financial Future.” Speakers will include Manny Medina of eMerge Americas, Cisneros Interactive President Victor Kong, and Sapient Nitro Global Head of Social Nathaniel Perez, among many others. I will give a lunchtime talk.  

  • Feb. 4: Awesome Foundation Miami celebrates its second birthday at Grand Central. 

  • Feb. 5: Knight Arts Challenge Community Q&A, 7 p.m., African Heritage Cultural Arts Center, 6161 NW 22nd Ave., Miami.

  • Feb. 6: Knight Arts Challenge Community Q&A, 11 a.m., Custom House Museum, 281 Front St., Key West, park at the Westin.

  • Feb. 9: WynCode presents its free Web development open house at The LAB Miami. 

  • Feb. 10: Meet KF Miami, our twice-a-month community breakfast in which we talk about the work we’re doing at Knight Foundation in Miami, listen to feedback and learn what others are doing. 

  • Feb. 10: Startup Grind Miami presents attorney Kevin Levy at The LAB Miami. 

  • Feb. 19-22: Patricia and Philip Frost Museum of Science presents Innovation and Engineering Weekend. 

  • Feb. 21: Code for America and Code for Miami present Code Across 2015 at Miami Ad School, part of a weekend of civic hacking events across the country focused on using technology to make our city and local governments better.

  • Feb. 23-28: Black Tech Week takes place at locations across South Florida. 

  • Feb. 25: Meet KF Miami, the second of our twice-a-month community breakfasts. 

  • Feb. 26: Brainfood @ The LAB presents Jim McKelvey, co-founder of Square and LaunchCode.
