MOCAD for the Holidays

By Carlie Dennis, MOCAD

This year for the holidays, MOCAD is getting in the spirit by offering lots of new products in our store, a new membership program and fun holiday programming!

If you’re looking for special, unexpected gifts for your loved ones this season, don’t miss the MOCAD store, where you’ll find a variety of items for all interests that will fit any budget.

Recently stocked items include a pine-scented, scratch-and-sniff holiday card and “baby bib bling” (bibs with a screen-printed giant gold chain) both by artist Jeff Karolski; an anatomical cutting board, lovingly dubbed the “man cutting board;” fluorescent Lucite cuffs designed by Alexandra Blak; and a variety of books on subjects ranging from contemporary art & architecture to climate change and urban agriculture to children’s books. If you can’t make it into the store to shop, there is still plenty of time to order from our online store at www.mocadetroit.org/store.

Our new membership offerings feature more options and benefits, as well as new additions to our affiliate businesses.  Gift memberships are a great way to treat the art-lover in your family, even a newborn! That’s right, we have an “Infant” membership, which is a lifetime membership to MOCAD that comes with a gift-wrapped MOCAD onesie.  Check out details at www.mocadetroit.org/membership.html.

Finally, don’t miss the last Family Day of the year—the Holiday Hootenanny! On Sunday, December 18th from 12PM to 4PM, this very special Holiday Hootenanny will be the third-annual collaboration between the Family Hootenanny and MOCAD.

The Family Hootenanny is a gathering of kids and their grownups brought together for the express purpose of singing, stomping, shouting, strumming, taking part in silliness and otherwise making music for the whole family. Past Hootenannies have included such sonic entertainment wonders as: homemade country ditties about popsicle soup and being stuck in playpens, tear-inducing renditions of Muppets songs and punk jams about woodland creatures! For this year’s edition, MOCAD will be leading holiday craft workshops, making fun and creative musical instruments from recycled and everyday materials. All materials will be provided free of charge. It’s going to be a wonderful holiday extravaganza. We hope to see you all there!
