Talk about books and art
There’s been a good amount of talk about art books, and talks about art, around these days. Which is all good. It’s another sign of a maturing community. And there’s good reason for it. For instance, [NAME] publications, funded by a 2008 Knight Arts challenge grant, recently released its latest art book, from Nicolas Lobo, a 100-pager called Album Graphics, after publishing four other books in the last two years.
Tuesday night, artTable, a national group that supports women in the arts, now with a local chapter, hosts a talk about art books at Books & Books, where they regularly hold court. “Artists Books — Discovering Another World” features three artists who have created conceptual books (not books about art, but books that are pieces in and of themselves). Later in the month on Feb. 19, artTable will hold a brunch to highlight a book from FIU professor Juan Martinez, about the artist Maria Brito, at the Frost Museum. It will be also be a chance to catch the show of her work there (she’s a member of what’s called the Miami Generation, an early group of Cuban-born artists).
Staying at the Frost, one of the most anticipated talks will come from the artist Christo himself, as part of the museum’s lecture series. He of course has a relationship with Miami, having wrapped our islands in pink. This time he will be talking about two upcoming projects, a river in Colorado and the Mastaba in the United Arab Emirates.
This Friday, back at Books & Books, the writer and art critic Ricardo Pau-Llosa will discuss contemporary art with artists Pablo Cano, Catherine Tafur, Tomas Esson and Alejandro Mendoza, as part of the Limited Edition Series from Irreversible magazine.
So, let’s talk about it.
