Update from Fredric Snitzer Gallery
On view now at Fredric Snitzer Gallery is American Odyssey, the latest exhibition by emerging local artist Natalya Laskis.
This series of paintings focuses on the American psyche and this country’s legacy of risk. The works are oil on canvas, with something of a sparse quality to them, with the details of each painting largely obscured. They evoke a ghostly or reflective atmosphere, in seemingly quiet and tranquil scenes that also seem to conjure up an air of mystery as well.
You may remember Laskis for her participation in an all-female group show at David Castillo last October. She was also assistant to Hernan Bas, who was something of a mentor to her, though her work has a decidedly different character to it. In the past, Laskis’ work has been based on her own photography from family trips to Thomasville Georgia, and this thread, at least in mood, seems to be continued with this series of paintings.
And for those who might be traveling this month, be sure to catch Snitzer artist Naomi Fisher’s The Brave Keep Undefiled, A Wisdom of Their Own exhibition at Leo Koenig Inc in New York City.
The show presents photographs, videos, and drawings of women Fisher has photographed in the past (all trained dancers and performers), dressed in leopard print and sequined outfits, camped out at Oleta State Park for a photo shoot teeming with spontaneous and primitive energy.
