Shaun M. Anderson is the Knight Chair in Sports, Race and Media at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is also a faculty affiliate for the university’s Center for Information, Technology and Public Life. He is the author of The Black Athlete Revolt: The Sport Justice Movement in the Age of #BlackLivesMatter, praised as one of the most anticipated books of 2023 by Kirkus Review, Publisher’s Weekly, Choice, Sports Business Journal and others.
Anderson is considered one of the nation’s leading experts regarding the impact of sport on society. He has been featured in prominent media outlets such as ESPN, NBC, The Tavis Smiley Show, Colors: A Dialogue on Race in America, Huffington Post, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, and many others. His expertise has been sought after as a consultant for global brands, including Nike, PBS, Athletic Greens, Major League Baseball, The Aspire Group, and the NYT bestselling children’s series, Ordinary People Change the World.
Anderson has published in several academic journals including Communication and Sport, International Journal of Sport Communication, and Popular Media Culture. He has also written several book chapters and popular press pieces focusing on activism, strategic communication, and justice in sports.
Anderson holds a Ph.D. from West Virginia University in communication studies, a master’s degree from Arkansas State University in mass communication, and a bachelor’s degree from the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff in mass communication.
