We’ve seen firsthand the transformative power of public spaces — from community parks to libraries to streets — through our work in the 26 Knight communities and by facilitating multi-city partnerships, such as Reimagining the Civic Commons. These spaces support more engaged residents, a sense of connection to where people live, and better information sharing, which have become even more essential when facing the challenges of 2020.

Knight believes that public spaces play an essential role in fostering more informed and engaged communities. This year’s program will focus on how leaders from across the country are pivoting their public spaces in response to the COVID-19 crisis, economic downturn, and the most recent wave of racial justice movements.  Curated discussions at the forum will explore several dimensions of public space, including:

  • leadership and decision-making
  • design and programming
  • cultivating equitable public spaces
  • leveraging technology in the public realm
