MIAMI (Feb. 21, 2012) — Starting today, South Floridians can apply for a share of millions in funding through the fifth annual Knight Arts Challenge Miami.
The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation sponsors the challenge as a way to bring South Florida together through the arts.

Applications will be accepted through March 19 at KnightArts.org.
“We’ve been so excited by this community’s great ideas – and we’re looking for more,” said Dennis Scholl, vice president/arts for Knight Foundation. “What’s your big idea for the South Florida arts? We want people to tell us what moves them, as a way to further engage this community.”
Anyone can enter the Knight Arts Challenge – independent artists and artist collectives of all types, arts institutions, businesses and anyone else who has a great idea for the arts. The initial two-question application is designed to be simple to encourage a wide range of applicants.
There are only three rules for the challenge: the idea must be about the arts; the project must take place in or benefit South Florida and the winners must find funds to match Knight’s commitment.
Applicants can ask questions about the challenge at two events.
• Web chat: From 1 to 2 p.m. on March 7, Knight Foundation staff will answer questions online via a live web chat at KnightArts.org. Participants go to the site at that time and type in a question.
• Town Hall Meeting: An in-person session will take place on March 14 at the Little Haiti Cultural Center, 212 NE 59th Terr., Miami. The Q&A in English will begin at 6 p.m., followed by a session in Spanish at 7 p.m. A Creole-speaking interpreter will also attend.
In just four years, Knight Foundation has invested more than $17 million in Arts Challenge projects – an amount that local arts supporters have doubled with matching funds. Big ideas that have already become a reality include the Borscht Film Festival, which recently showed a film at Sundance, The LegalArt Residency, Miami’s only live-work residence for artists, Sleepless Night Miami Beach, where tens of thousands enjoyed 12 hours of nonstop culture, and a sound art gallery on Lincoln Road.
To learn more about the challenge’s impact, watch “Ideas in Motion,” a documentary on the contest at 7:30 p.m. tonight on WPBT Channel 2.
