Journalism innovation the focus of The Paley Center for Media discussion series supported by $250,000 from Knight Foundation

Series to kick off Sept. 27 in New York with a panel on “Fueling Extremism in a Wired World”

NEW YORK — Aug. 29, 2016 — The Paley Center for Media, the preeminent nonprofit dedicated to celebrating the cultural, creative and social significance of media and its impact on society, will produce a series of panels and events to discuss the challenges facing media in the digital age, and explore solutions with $250,000 in support from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.

The multipart PALEYIMPACT series examines how innovation is shaping public awareness, the future of journalism, and action on important social, cultural and political issues. It will also explore the ways in which technology impacts how information, knowledge and news is distributed and shared today. The first two events will be held this fall, with the series continuing through 2017 at the Paley Center’s New York and Los Angeles locations.

“Through the PALEYIMPACT series we hope to connect a diverse group of people who are passionate about journalism, while showcasing the issues affecting the field today,” said Jennifer Preston, Knight Foundation vice president for journalism. “In this way we can create a bigger community of problem-solvers, working to meet new information demands and shape the future of news.”

“The Paley Center is delighted to partner with Knight Foundation once again on our PALEYIMPACT series,” said Maureen J. Reidy, president and CEO of The Paley Center. “Exploring how journalism shapes public discourse on important issues is central to our mission. With Knight Foundation support, we will continue to engage diverse communities active across all media sectors to ask how innovation in technology impacts news and storytelling today.”

The PALEYIMPACT fall lineup features:

Tuesday, Sept. 27, 7 p.m. ET in New York

“Fueling Extremism in a Wired World”

Presented in association with the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum and supported by Knight Foundation.

This program will examine the evolution of propaganda in media from the days of Nazi Germany to the present: Nazis used radio and film; today’s extremists use social media to foment hate, recruit followers and incite violence. An expert panel will look at the responsibilities of journalists, technology companies and governments as they explore tensions between free speech and incendiary propaganda. Panelists will include: Emily Bell, director, Tow Center for Digital Journalism, Columbia Journalism School; Monika Bickert, head of product policy, Facebook; Steve Luckert, Ph.D., senior program curator, digital learning and new media, U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum; Jehane Noujaim, filmmaker; and Richard Stengel, undersecretary of state for public diplomacy and public affairs, U.S. Department of State.

Wednesday, Nov. 2, 6 p.m. PT in Los Angeles

“Advancing the Story: The Next Chapter in Media Impact”

Presented in association with the University of Southern California Annenberg Norman Lear Center and supported by Knight Foundation

Just one week before the U.S. presidential election, this program will explore how technology and storytelling are raising awareness about important issues, and address how we can connect the dots between media exposure and social or political action. Experts from news, entertainment and technology will examine how data is used to measure audience impact. Storytellers will talk about hot topics that drive the news cycle and inspire scripts. Renowned film and television writer, producer and director Norman Lear will headline the event, with additional panelists to be announced.

The 2017 lineup will be posted at paleycenter.org early next year. In addition to live events, lessons from the work will be shared on the Paley Center’s web and social media platforms.

Funding for The Paley Center for Media is part of Knight Foundation’s efforts to promote journalism innovation in the digital age. Since 2010 Knight has supported the work of The Paley Center with more than $1 million in investments.
