Knight Arts Challenge Contest Opens For Applications Feb. 19

Previous Challenge Winners Shine in New Documentary Airing This Month

MIAMI – Beginning Feb. 19, artists and art advocates can apply for the third round of the Knight Arts Challenge, the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation’s community-wide contest to find the best ideas for the arts in South Florida.  Applications will be accepted through March 15 at KnightArts.org.

Also this month, South Florida viewers will get a behind the scenes look at some of the region’s most innovative projects with a new documentary on the challenge debuting Feb. 18 on WPBT Channel 2.

So far, 51 individual artists, small non-profits and the area’s largest institutions have won funding from the challenge, which aims to bring together diverse South Florida through the arts. In 2009, the winning ideas included putting an orchestra back in the pit during the Miami City Ballet’s 2011-13 seasons, creating an incubator for the arts in Wynwood and launching an online site for locally produced artisanal goods.

“The documentary will show South Florida the power of the arts to bring people together – and hopefully inspire the big ideas we’re looking for in applications for the challenge,” said Dennis Scholl, Miami program director for Knight Foundation, who leads the initiative.

The half hour documentary, produced by local Emmy-winning filmmaker Kirmaya Cevallos along with Knight Foundation, will air at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 18 and 23. It highlights several projects including Leggo My Demo, which showcases new electronic music in South Florida and New World School of the Arts’ ArtSeen, a Wynwood studio where seniors have the space to explore and create their final projects.

To see footage from the documentary, visit www.KnightArts.org/documentary.

Have an idea? Visit www.KnightArts.org beginning Feb. 19. The two-question application is designed to be simple to attract applicants who aren’t traditional grant seekers.

There are only three rules: The idea is about the arts; the project takes place in or benefits South Florida; and applicants must find other funding to match the Knight Foundation grant. Individuals, nonprofits and for profit organizations are eligible to apply.
