COLUMBIA, S.C. — Oct. 14, 2015 — The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation today announced $250,000 in support to help the residents of Columbia, S.C., in the aftermath of Hurricane Joaquin.
The funding – $125,000 to Harvest of Hope and $125,000 to the Salvation Army – will support immediate relief efforts for Columbia, one of the 26 communities where Knight Foundation invests.
“Ensuring the future success of Columbia, one of the cities where the Knight brothers once owned newspapers, is important to us,” said Lillian Weinberg, Knight Foundation director for community foundations. “We hope the city is able to recover quickly and chart a strong path for revival and rebuilding.”
The devastating Category 3 storm brought historic rainfall to South Carolina earlier this month, sending thousands to shelters and leaving tens of thousands without drinkable water and power.
Waccamaw Community Foundation in Myrtle Beach, S.C., another Knight city, is also providing $50,000 from its Knight-supported donor-advised fund to the Central Carolina Community Foundation to help with relief efforts.
