February 23, 2012 (Detroit)—The Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA) has named participating communities in the next round of Inside|Out, which brings high-quality reproductions of masterpieces from the DIA’s collection to the streets and parks of metro Detroit. The museum also announced that the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation has provided $250,000 to sponsor Inside|Out for 2012 and 2013.
“We are beginning the third year of Inside|Out, which has been immensely popular,” said Graham W. J. Beal, DIA director. “Knight Foundation’s support ensures that we can continue to engage people with art in settings that are familiar to them, fostering both creativity and pride in their communities.”
Knight Foundation believes weaving the arts into the fabric of communities inspires the people who live there, which is exactly what Inside|Out has done over the past two years. “We believe that the arts are a catalyst for public dialogue,” said Dennis Scholl, vice president/arts for Knight Foundation. “And that shared cultural experiences contribute to a sense of place and communal identity. Inside|Out has a proven record of accomplishing that, and we are happy to support it.”
Each community will have seven to 10 reproductions clustered within walking or bike-riding distance. The exact locations where they will be on display are still being determined. Once the locations are finalized, they will be featured on an interactive map on the DIA’s website, www.dia.org.
The DIA will offer free museum admission to a Family Sunday for residents of participating communities. This will encourage them to come to the DIA to experience “their” works of art in person and enjoy the variety of activities the museum offers.
Participating communities, with their free days noted, are:
· Eastpointe/Roseville April 22
· Mount Clemens June 24
· Farmington June 17
· Farmington Hills June 17
· Southfield June 3
· Clarkston May 20
· Bloomfield Township April 15
· Wyandotte April 29
· Wayne May 20
· Taylor April 29
· The Five Grosse Pointes May 6
Each city will plan activities centered around its Inside|Out works. Previous events have included a wine-tasting bus tour, bike and walking tours, talks at local libraries, and a DIA presence at annual festivals. The DIA will continue tailoring events that capture the unique character of each community. New this year, the DIA has created an Inside|Out Facebook page to accommodate the growing interest in the program. Facebook users can interact with each other online and share their Inside|Out experiences through messages, photos, videos and more. To utilize the Inside|Out Facebook page, visit http://www.facebook.com/dia.insideout and “Like” the page.

The Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA), one of the premier art museums in the United States, is home to more than 60,000 works that comprise a multicultural survey of human creativity from ancient times through the 21st century. From the first Van Gogh painting to enter a U.S. museum (Self-Portrait, 1887), to Diego Rivera’s world-renowned Detroit Industry murals (1932–33), the DIA’s collection is known for its quality, range, and depth. The DIA’s mission is to create opportunities for all visitors to find personal meaning in art.
Programs are made possible with support from the City of Detroit.
