The XXIX International Hispanic Theatre Festival continues with multiple performances this weekend. It shouldn’t be hard to find the right performance to attend. The question is stamina. On Saturday, July 19th, Spain’s Periferia Teatro presents the family friendly Guyi Guyi, a play by Juan Manuel Quiñonero and María Socorro García, and directed by Juan Manuel Quiñonero, opens at the Key Biscayne Community Center. Guyi Guyi uses the magic of puppetry to reveal a story of identity, the value of difference and the prejudices that cripple us. This is a bilingual production. (Read the full program here.)

“A Wolf at the Door.”

On another family friendly note, this weekend is the last weekend to catch the Miami Stage Company & the Miami Children’s Theater production of Disney’s Mulan Jr.! At $10 a seat, the shows have sold out, but two more shows were opened up for the general public. Now that the World Cup is over, we can talk about Brazil in another context: film. The Brazilian film A Wolf at the Door (O lobo atrás da porta) opens this Friday, July 18th at the Coral Gables Cinema. Based on a true story, but not necessarily family friendly, details the harrowing journey of a kidnapped child and her parents struggle to come to terms with secrets that come to light. Director Fernando Coimbra uses suburban Rio de Janeiro as the landscape and the key that binds this story together.
