A Charlotte Random Act of Culture® blitz

By Aaron Fiedler, Arts & Science Council

With the help of the North Carolina Dance Theatre, the Arts & Science Council (ASC) led a Random Act of Culture® blitz the last two weeks of May that brought a little culture to Center City Charlotte and beyond.

On Saturday May 14, choreographer Mark Diamond led a group of six dancers to Atherton Mills Market, the site of the very first Charlotte Random Act of Culture® last August. Performing twice, the dancers wowed and surprised the crowd of Saturday morning shoppers with an improvised ballet to Vivaldi’s Four Seasons.

The group took that piece on to the Charlotte Douglas International Airport on Wednesday, May 25. For two hours they performed five Random Acts of Culture™ that entertained travelers in concourses throughout the airport. This particular performance also brought the first crowd interruption experienced in Charlotte. A traveler on a phone, apparently irritated by the disruption, turned off the stereo playing the music for the dancers. In a follow up interview he apologized for his behavior and said the performance was beautiful.

An additional four Random Acts took place Thursday at the Chow Down food truck event in Uptown Charlotte. The event brought together upscale, diverse cuisine, as well as a diverse crowd. One food vendor thanked ASC for the experience on our Facebook page.

As always, ASC is constantly working to bring RACs to the people of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County. Stay tuned!
