A solo show filled with sites and sounds

In keeping with the interdisciplinary atmosphere of Miami lately (and as mentioned in an earlier post about art on stage), one of the myriad of shows opening up on Second Saturday this April 9 will be a highly interactive program from Nancy Garcia at the Bas Fisher Invitational, a Knight Arts Challenge grantee. Garcia will be showing video and photography, but also a couple of audio pieces, one of which will coincide with another Knight-funded and cross-genre event, the first O, Miami Poetry Festival taking place throughout April.

Garcia was raised in Miami but has been based in New York for over a decade, where she has shown at the Whitney, the Greene Naftali Gallery and the Sculpture Center, among other spaces. She’s an image maker, a choreographer, a performer and a musician, wearing the later hat having toured with the noise band Monotract and releasing a solo album.

On Saturday night, she will unveil a new video work called “Power Trio” and a concept audio compilation, “Lover’s Alarm.” For that piece, she asked friends to share “a sound you want your lover/s to wake up to,” which, aside from being heard in the gallery during the opening, will be downloadable (with pieces available for ringtones). Give it a listen at www.loversalarmclock.com.

Garcia is also making an audio walking tour, an experimental sound tour through a Miami location (echoes of Janet Cardiff’s walk through Central Park?), which will be up and available on April 15, and which is in conjunction with the O, Miami affair. To find the guide, you’ll go to www.omiami.org, www.basfisherinvitational.com, or www.nancygarcia.org. You’ll be able to hear it on a smart phone or media player. Lots of sites and sounds going on here on a lot of levels.
