This Saturday, Prince Emmanuel Abiodun Aderele — percussionist, visual artist, Sacred Yorùbá choreographer/dancer and arts educator — will debut his latest work “YorùbáRhythm” during Dance Now! Miami’s Open Stage series at the Little Haiti Cultural Center.

“YorùbáRhythm” is an ancestral Journey of Yorùbá, the distinct native tongue of Nigeria, combined with sacred drum & dance. Yorùbá is culturally specific. Its spiritual, aesthetic and rhythmic expressions emerges from the body (the voice) and sound (drums). The piece includes the voices of various Yorùbá talking drums and sacred dance moves, including Yorùbá Bata, Talking Drum (Dundun/Apala) and Sakara.

Over a three-year period, Aderele studied the art of Yorùbá to create a choreography that reconnects South Florida’s West African diaspora to their roots, to their ancient origins. “Dance is the physical manifestation of music,” Aderele said: “music and dance have always been extremely important in African culture. All kinds of drums are played throughout West Africa, however Yorùbá Talking Drums are specific to the Yorùbá Tribe predominantly in Nigeria, West Africa.”

This Saturday, along with several Miami-based choreographers, reconnect through the arts. Aderele, along with several exceptional Miami-based performing artists, will debut works-in-progress and exerts from longer works during Dance Now! Miami’s Open Stage series at the Little Haiti Cultural Center.
