Wynwood has gone into hibernation for the most part during August. Although galleries and restaurants remain open, not a lot new is being unveiled until next month. So leave it up to the Design District to keep some liveliness in the air, starting tomorrow for a Second Saturday Gallery Walk.

In fact, some of the more interesting work is being brought out in places and spaces that are relatively unfamiliar.

Starting with Justin H. Long’s “Spin(naker) Theory” at the Michael Jon Gallery (20 NE 41st St.). Don’t know much about this gallery? You’re not alone, as it has only had exhibits in 2012 (one of which was a handsome show of artist Min Song, in April, that featured a great lit-candle sculpture called “Neo Geo Candle Swindle”).

But you likely will recognize Long’s name: he’s had interesting alternative shows, last year for instance in the project space at the De la Cruz Collection, where he and partner Robert Lorie installed a performance piece that involved a home-made crossbow. He’s been in numerous shows around town, and has curated one-off nights as well. What’s he doing at Michael Jon? Well, the title refers to quantum mechanics, where spin, or spinnaker, is the force behind sails (as in sail boating) and aerodynamic interactions. “On hearing ‘1,2,3 hoist,’ throw the sin(naker) up and forward past the jib,” is how the sailing aspect is explained for the show. “Remember, with a ‘chuck hoist’ the pole is not set until the spin(naker) is up.” Go from there.

A couple of events and shows will be taking place at the 3900 building on NE 1st Avenue, including “Geochasms,” a sound and geodesics installation; and an oil painting show from Gladys Beltran, “Paintings from My Spiritual World,” at 96 NE 40th Street. Since other galleries and showrooms will be open, it is best to just stroll and find some gems you may not have known were lurking around in the District, sometimes for one night, other times for longer.
