Art and Fashion

Oh, The Tangled Webs We Weave… opens this Saturday at the David Castillo Gallery. It is a solo exhibition by Karelle Levy Parisian-born and Miami-based founder and operator of local fashion line, KRELwear.

You may remember Levy pitched in to help with the costume design on the TM Sister’s ambitious performance at Locust Projects Space, WHIRL CRASH GO!, at Locust Projects last summer. Though a very good portion of the garments in Levy’s fashion line can be considered conventional, not to mention functional, some of the designer’s earliest forays into the world of fashion overlapped into the art world, in which she devised a method known as “Toobular” design, creating pieces with as few seams as possible in a process by which the fabrics are weaved and knit until the yarn is completely spent, creating pieces that accentuate imperfection and creates spontaneous forms in the design.

Levy expands upon that this Saturday, presenting her unique weaving method to create an installation in the Castillo Gallery in the project room. Covered in hand-knit and shredded fabric like a spider’s web, and utilizing glow in the dark, fluorescently colored neon yarn, the results should be interesting.
