Art holds ground all over town

Lisa Sanditz, “If you didn’t know it’s the Swiss Alps, you might believe you’re there;” The Girls’ Club.

It’s that time of the year: too much too see, too little time, only so many days in a week. November will be stuffed with openings, talks, happenings, including a lot of art-centric events coming up during the Book Fair (Nov. 16-23; more on that later).

So to make it easier just for this Friday, you can take a pick from three geographically diverse exhibits – north, center and southwest.

Starting up north in Broward, The Girls’ Club will open its annual exhibit. “The Moment. The Backdrop. The Persona” is thematically tied together by works that deal with the narrative, with storytelling, in a contemporary art vernacular. Drawings, paintings, video and mixed-media works from more than 30 artists have been picked out from the collection of Francie Bishop Good and David Horvitz, each piece revealing its own personal, isolated moment. And although it is called The Girls’ Club, boys are represented too. The “girls” include Sophie Calle, Wangechi Mutu, Christina Pettersson and Jillian Mayer; the “boys” are Hernan Bas, Sanford Biggers and Aramis Gutierrez, obviously naming just a few.

On the opposite side of the art world, exhibits from two local women open up at Farside/art@work galleries near FIU. “Following (hollowed out spaces)” is the latest from Kerry Phillips, whose work can literally be deemed home-spun. She uses old cloth, thread, tape and refuse from her studio combined with discarded objects found around it to create her distinctive sculptures.

Sara Stites will unveil “DOUBLETAKE,” drawings devoid of color in order to illuminate the process and dialogue of mark-making.

Between these two destinations in downtown Miami, Fred Snitzer opens a solo show from Diego Singh in his newly located space. “Plateau Plateau” is comprised of two series, Oil Paintings and Hinge Painters, but aren’t quite what you might think. For instance, the “oils” are truly made with un-pigmented oil, referencing much more the matter used to run cars and a mechanized society than a Masters’ painting.

They all promise to be interesting outings – if you are mobile enough you can make them all.

“Following (hollowed out spaces)” and “DOUBLETAKE” open at 8 p.m. on November 7th at the Farside and art@work galleries, 1245 S.W. 87th Ave., Miami; 305-264-3355. “The Moment. The Backdrop. The Persona” opens at 7 p.m. on Nov. 7, 117 N.E. 2nd St., Ft. Lauderdale; www.girlsclubclollection,org “Plateau Plateau” opens at 7 p.m. on November 7 at Fredric Snitzer Gallery, 1540 N.E.
