Get ready. Hold your breath. Jump into the jam-packed group shows opening up on Saturday, June 9. These exhibits, in which very little light or white space gets through from one piece to another, have become a bit of a Miami summer tradition; in the hot, slow summer months, big shows with lots of names pull in an audience, for one thing. It also lets galleries play around a little more than they may usually do.

David Castillo has been presenting a yearly survey of South Florida artists for several years now. This time around, he has given over the curatorial reins to Brandi Reddick of the successful Miami-Dade Art in Public Places program, who has picked out 19 artists to highlight.

Some names should be familiar, such as Kevin Arrow and the up-and-comer Sleeper, while other names are refreshingly new. And it will be a mixed bag of forms as well, from video to painting, assemblage to sculpture. One featured artist is Dinorah de Jesus Rodriguez, who will also be part of a three-woman video, one-day, outdoor event June 16, as part of Better Block Fort Lauderdale. Her hand-altered 16mm video, “Is It True Blondes Have More Fun?” will be presented by The Girls’ Club (a Knight Arts grantee) for the interesting-sounding block party (on the 500 block of N.W. 1st Ave., Fort Lauderdale).

But for sheer volume, northing can compare to Primary Projects‘ exhibition, with 400 (or more) works from 46 (or more) artists, for “Salon de Notre Societe.” It is based on the old French tradition of showing off tons of work in the salons and sitting rooms of the upper-crust of Paris — except Primary Projects curators want this salon to feel anything but elite. They will cram the walls with pieces from artists who at some point felt they were on the outside looking in, both established and break-out, local and international, and all the art will be affordably priced. There are far too many names in this exhibit to suggest highlights, except to say that the work of Miru Kim — returns, she of the highly publicized pig-pen performance at the gallery during last year’s Art Basel — returns.
