Asolo Repertory Theatre performs “Las Meninas” at SMDCAC
Set in the court of King Louis XIV, Las Meninas is based on the true story of Queen Marie Thérèse and her clandestine relationship with Nabo Sensugali — her African servant. The play, written by Lynn Nottage, Pulitzer Prize winner for the play Ruined, was inspired by an essay she read years ago about the African presence in royal families. In an interview, Nottage said, “Las Meninas is probably a little challenging for some of the audience. The play is so unusual stylistically, thematically. Many directors over the years shied away from it.” However, the Sarasota-based Asolo Repertory Theatre and its Artistic Director Michael Donald Edwards have not shied away from the complexity of Las Meninas. On Friday, May 20 and Saturday, May 21 at 8 p.m. and Sunday, May 22 at 2 p.m., the South Miami-Dade Cultural Arts Center, a division of the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs, will present Las Meninas.
