Bad Brilliance

Have you seen this man?

It’s Bad Brilliance, the playful (and sometimes disruptive) performance art alter ego of Brooklyn-based artist Andrew Strasser. Strasser is best known as the designer of album cover art for laptop musician Girl Talk, as well as creating stage visuals for him. He’s recently worked in similar capacity with PARTY-rocker Andrew WK and DJ Larry Tee.

Since August, Strasser’s been hanging out in Miami as part of the Fountainhead Residency program, and he’s been all over the city, in his light-bulb headed costume, appearing everywhere from South Beach to the Grove and apparently even getting escorted out of a few art gallery’s on Second Saturday Art Walks. It’s all part of his upcoming exhibition at Bas Fisher Invitational, this coming September 12.

As Bad Brilliance, Strasser’s been combing this town for people who, as he puts it, “represent a stylized cross section of Miami’s population.” He invites these people back to his studio, where the performance continues. With a mannequin donning Bad Brilliance’s costume, and laying on the couch (pretending to be asleep), and Strasser posing as Bad Brilliance’s personal photographer, he will then photograph each of these individuals.  His stylized portraits are what will eventually end up at the exhibition.
