Ballet without limits at the North Carolina Dance Theatre
“Limitless,” the North Carolina Dance Theatre’s season opening performance, features a collection of three ballets, ranging from classical to contemporary. “‘Limitless’ is a very diverse performance,” said choreographer and Artistic Director Jean-Pierre Bonnefoux. “We chose to name the performance ‘Limitless’ because it shows that our dancers are excellent at performing more than one style of dance.”
Among the performance selections are Dwight Rhoden’s “The Groove,” which will be making its world premiere. Set to 1980s house music, “The Groove” will utilize the entire company in a difficult and energetic piece that “is as challenging to do as it looks” according to Emily Ramirez, new company dancer. Ramirez is one of seven dancers new to the North Carolina Dance Theatre this season.
Jean-Pierre Bonnefoux’s piece, “Blue Danube,” will also be a first for Charlotte audiences. The ballet premiered at the Chautauqua Institute in New York where the Company takes up residency in the summer. “Blue Danube” is dreamy and classically exuberant performance set to music by Johann Strauss II.
The third piece featured in “Limitless” is Sasha Jane’s “Shelter,” which explores the variety of relationships in our everyday lives. It centers around one female character and the roles people play in her life. Jamie Dee, now in her fourth season at the Dance Theatre, dances the lead character. “I feel incredibly authentic and honest in this piece,” commented Dee. “It’s one of the most difficult physical challenges I’ve had.” She adds, “When the work finishes, I’m left insanely exhausted, but entirely fulfilled.”
“Limitless” will be performed at the Knight Theater on Tryon Steet from October 25 to October 27. The ballet begins at 7:30 p.m. and tickets range from $25-$79. Special rates are available for high school and college students.
