Crafty Planet, mnartists.org and Silverwood Park want to take you on a Field Trip

The giant parachute in action at last year’s Field Trip in Silverwood Park

The weather will be mild in the Twin Cities this Saturday, a lovely early fall sort of day perfect for a Field Trip. In Twin Cities’ Silverwood Park, visitors will find a full afternoon in store: more than 20 artist-led activities, a well-curated local craft fair, live performances of poetry and music, as well as hiking, canoeing, lawn games, fort-building and much more.

Thanks to Crafty Planet’s No Coast Craft-O-Rama, visitors can browse through a variety of handmade wares – paper goods, jewelry and leather, baby things, clever poster designs and such – on offer from more than 50 local craft vendors.

Get a preview of the newly revamped mnartists.org website (officially debuting in November) and spend some time at the Traveling Art Museum. Amble along the trails for a self-guided tour through this year’s Art on Foot works by Minnesota artists, recently installed in the park: find sculptures by Trygve Nordberg, Gita Ghei, Pete Driessen, Shannon Estlund, John Fleischer, Al Wadzinski, Gregory Fitz, Andrew MacGuffie, Mark Estlund, Mark O’Brien, Jim Proctor, Amanda Lovelee and Alonso Sierralta; and poetry by Louis Jenkins, Kathryn Kysar, Diana Joseph, Hawona Sullivan Janzen, Sun Yung Shin and Sierrra DeMulder.

Partake of the Sunflower Revolution seed harvest with the artists of low tech/high joy. Burn off some energy canoeing on Silver Lake, then fortify yourself at one of the food trucks on site for the day. Gather the kids around the giant parachute; play larger-than-life versions of Jenga, Scrabble and Twister on the field. Take a treasure hunt through the grounds; build a fort in the woods. There aren’t many warm weekend days left to play with this year – I can’t think of a more congenial way to spend one.

Field Trip will take place in Silverwood Park from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, September 20, 2500 County Road E., St. Anthony, Minn. Find detailed information and a full schedule of events on the park’s website, mnartists.org and in the Facebook event listing.
