“Da-Da” premieres at the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center

On April 4th and 5th, “Da-Da: A Contemporary Dance” by Augusto Soledade premieres at the Aventura Arts and Cultural Center at 8 p.m. “Da-Da.”

When I hear the word dada in the context of contemporary dance, I think anti-movement. However, Soledade’s expansive definition of ‘da-da’ is anything but exclusive and/or rigid. It opens the stage for new possibilities.

“Da-Da refers to a basic rhythmic structure that is at the center of the choreographic exploration,” writes Brazz Dance Founding Artistic Director & resident choreographer Augusto Soledade. “The word ‘da-da’ brings, at various levels, a sense of beginning, the first two beats of a binary rhythmic structure ‘da-da’, a heart beat ‘da-da’, or a musical sequence ‘da-da’; the first words muttered ‘da-da’, and Dadaism…. The possible associations are vast, and generate a sense of excitement and thrilling response, both physical and emotional.”

The performance abstracts and extracts notes from traditional flamenco and fuses it with Afro-Brazilian rhythms, which Soledade embodies, yet “Da-Da” doesn’t reproduce flamenco in its purest form. It re-interprets it. It uses flamenco rhythms to develop a choreography that connects distinct cultures.

“’Da-Da’ will explore my connection to rhythm in order to understand it as my Afro-Brazilian ancestral legacy and cultural construct,” writes Soledade. “And use it as an artistic experience through dance to intrigue, affect and comfort a wide range of audience members.”
