Dan Graham and more video at MOCA

Dan Graham will talk about his sculpture and video.

Dan Graham has worked on the formative edge of Conceptual Art since the 1960s, working with text, performance art, video and likely most familiarly, glass-and mirrored sculpture, which appear in sculpture gardens and outdoor spaces through the globe.

Most of his early work involved video and performance, where viewing the films at times became an optical game on the mind and eye, with the use of time-delayed techniques and mirrors playing with real and manipulated reflection. When Graham moved into sculpture by the late 1980s, he drew from these experiments in reflection and illusion when creating his half-glass half-mirrored sculptures that the visitor walks through or otherwise engages with. One of his most famous works is called “Two-Way Mirror Cylinder Inside Cube and a Video Salon,” made to accompany a sculpture in Manhattan in 1992, around which an Art Talk at MOCA will be held this Saturday.

Graham will be joined by MOCA director and curator Alex Gartenfeld to discuss this ground-breaking piece, along with the rest of the body of his work. It’s something contemporary art lovers will not want to miss.

It is part of a video exhibit “Video Container: Museum as Method,” another in the Knight Foundation-supported series at MOCA. The exhibit, which runs through April 16, will feature single-channel videos, ranging from short abstracts to longer-form documentaries. The works come from 15 international artists who work in the genre, including Graham’s “Two-Way Mirror.” This is MOCA’s niche.

“Art Talk: Dan Graham” takes place at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 29. “Video Container: Museum as Method” runs through April 16, with screenings on specific dates; make sure to look up the schedule. The events are free. MOCA is located at 770 N.E. 125th St., North Miami; www.mocanomi.org.
