Discovering dance and personal identity at AileyCamp Miami
By Jodi Farrell, Adrienne Arsht Center
As far as summer camps go, six weeks spent dancing, getting into deep discussions and learning the art of self-expression inside one of the biggest cultural centers in the country is a pretty awesome experience.
It’s been an intense summer for 100 young Miamians, ages 11 to 14, at AileyCamp Miami, a free dance and self-development camp inside the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County. With studios, stages and rehearsal spaces turned into classrooms, these kids harnessed the power of jazz, ballet, modern dance and West African dance while learning how to collaborate, take healthy care of their bodies, and develop self-discipline skills to prepare them for high school.
More than 1,900 family members, friends and supporters packed the Knight Concert Hall on Aug. 3 for their public show, “Reflections,” a dance, drumming and spoken word performance that celebrated the camp’s five-year anniversary at the Arsht Center.
Missed it? Check out the video above to see how the camp went down in the campers’ own words.
