Since 2003, FUNDarte’s Founder & Executive Director, Ever Chavez, has brought some of the most dynamic, cutting-edge international performing artists and companies to Miami. This Sunday, February 23rd, at 7 p.m., Companhia Urbana de Dança, direct from Rio de Janeiro, performs at On.Stage Black.Box Theater at Miami-Dade County Auditorium, and you should be there, too.

Led by the artistic genius of Sonia Destri Lie, Companhia Urbana de Dança tells the gritty life stories of the eight dancers who come from the dangerous and culturally rich favelas of Rio. Described as fierce and high-energy, the company loosely fuses urban hip-hop and Brazilian street forms to create explosive, stamina defying solos and group movements that are rigorously choreographed.

By threading street dance with contemporary dance, Destri finds a way to universalize and valorize the stories of people who are often discounted because of where they come from. This Sunday, for one night only, Companhia Urbana de Dança will perform two works — Na Pista (On the dance floor) and ID: ENTIDADES (ID: Entities) — that transcend stereotypes.
