Ending year 2 of Random Acts of Culture™ in Charlotte
By Aaron Fiedler, Arts & Science Council
With a Random Act of Culture™ last Saturday at Atherton Mills Market, the place where we did our first, we completed our 62nd RAC since we started the project in August 2010.
We started out the month of April with Opera Carolina at Queens University of Charlotte. The performers sang multiple arias in common areas and in the cafeteria to stunned students, staff and faculty members. The RAC even helped woo prospective students who were dining while the Opera performed.
The Opera followed that up with another RAC at North Mecklenburg High School – the second RAC the group has performed in a Charlotte-Mecklenburg School. It was an interesting setting for an RAC to be sure. Students were caught off guard with varied reactions. By the end of each though large groups gathered around the performers, interacted and cheered them on.
RACs also hit a Fresh Market grocery store on two separate Saturdays, returned to the IKEA store in Charlotte to surprise shoppers with opera singers and dancers from Kinetic Works amidst furniture and home goods on a Sunday afternoon, and at Atherton Mills Market in South Charlotte on a Saturday morning.
We look forward in the coming months to telling you about other projects we’re involved with the Knight Foundation. As usual, stay tuned!
