Enrollment is open at the McColl Center’s Summer Arts Institute

McColl Center for Visual Art.

The Summer Arts Institute is now enrolling students at the McColl Center for Visual Art (a Knight Arts grantee). If your child is a budding artist, creative genius or just plain bored during the Summer months, give them the opportunity to “activate their creativity” and work with a professional artist in a weeklong class. Half-day sessions and full-day sessions are offered, with classes running from June 10 to August 2.

Some of the exciting classes include:

  • 3D Sculpture: Students will learn about shaping and combining materials, while studying wind movement to create mobiles and simple machines to create a marshmallow launcher.  For students in grades 3-6.
  • Create It + Wear It!: Students will learn how to weave, warp, and weft to make wearable art. For students in grades 1-3 and 3-6.
  • Digital Drawing: Using an iPad, iPhone, or iPod Touch students will explore digital painting and drawing programs. For students in grades 6-8.
  • Encaustic Painting: Encaustic painting is a technique that applies pigmented beeswax to a canvas. Students will learn ancient and modern approaches to this technique. For students in grades 6-8.

Enrollment can be done online or by phone at 704-332-5535. Classes cost between $150-$325, depending on the choice of full- or half-day classes, as well as membership at the McColl Center.  At the end of each class, students will exhibit their work during a special reception.
