Finding the Funding

Over $10 million in arts funding is poised to disappear from Miami-Dade County, according to today’s Miami Herald.  The paper reports Mayor Carlos Alvarez is proposing slashing the $14.8 million the county currently distributes via grants to nearly 500 arts groups to $4.4 million and 100 arts groups.

Current grant recipients, including the New World Symphony and the Miami Light Project, are understandably distressed and busy launching campaigns to convince city commissioners that the arts are not the place to close the $427 million budget gap.

Hearings to debate the county’s budget are scheduled for Sept 3 and 17, click here to read the complete Herald story.
