Fountainhead focuses on local art

The Fountainhead enterprise continues to spread its wings. There is the Fountainhead Residency program, which has brought some great artists to town, many of whom have then had exhibits in Miami; the Fountainhead Studios, which houses myriad artists and has open studio nights; and now there is Your Fountainhead, a semi-nomadic exhibition space (currently in Wynwood) that highlights local artists.

On Wednesday, Jan. 28, the latest iteration opens with “The Time to Buy is Now.” The title is not as aggressive as it may seem; it comes from work of one of the featured artists, Loriel Beltran. His name should suggest that this is something to make a point to see. His sculptures in particular leave a lasting impression, made from wood (scraps of shipping crates, for instance) and marble (discarded kitchen countertops as another example).

He will be joined by a high-quality roster of his peers. Jenny Brillhart, Sinisa Kukec, Sara Stites, Michael Vazquez, Typoe, David Rohn, Timothy Buwalda, Santiago Rubino, Ian Peter Hosfeld and Antonia Wright comprise the other 10 artists who will be exhibiting – that’s an impressive list.

Each one has carved out a niche in the Miami art scene. For instance, Vazquez uses his paint brush to exhilarating effect; Rohn incorporates performative qualities to his indelible works; Wright has become a leading video art explorer; and Typoe and Rubino come out of a street-art background.

Fountainhead director Kathryn Mikesell is on a mission to showcase local art, and to get people to truly support it. The artists are usually on hand for these openings, and Mikesell encourages visitors to talk to them and ask questions. The goal is to make the art accessible and familiar, taking it out of the elite tower and into the everyday conversation of Miamians.

“The Time To Buy is Now” opens Jan. 28 from 5:30-8 p.m., 65 NW 24th St., Miami; www.yourfountainhead.com.
