Wynwood, Inkub8 & the Godoy-Pradera Projects

Once upon a time, in a decade not too long ago, Wynwood was a gritty working-class neighborhood that housed Miami’s fashion district. It’s where I would go once a month to buy spools of thread, invisible zippers, muslin and needles from Scott Notions to restock a small sewing factory that I started in the mid-’90s. I loved the neighborhood. I even tried and failed to convinced my mother to buy a vacant warehouse.

Fast forward 20 years, and Vogue names Wynwood one of the 15 coolest neighborhoods in the world. It houses one of the world’s largest concentrations of outdoor graffiti. Panther Coffee, JugoFresh, Miami Light Project and a slew of galleries, luxury retail stores and chic restaurants now occupy former factory and sewing equipment and supply company spaces. Next up: multimillion dollar mixed-use projects. Gentrification is merciless.

Despite these radical changes, one constant remains: Inkub8. The vibrant contemporary performing arts space provides local artists with a workspace to explore, shape and share their work. Through November 22nd, Inkub8 Artists in Residence Carlota Pradera and Lazaro Godoy – known collectively as Godoy-Pradera Projects – take over the space as they work on their new project, “Harmonicum Accordion.”

“Harmonicum Accordion” is a work-in-progress and a portrait of a dysfunctional family. Through family myth and fable, the artists explore, through movement, sound and silence, the twisted and erratic behaviors that make families all too human.

Join Pradera and Godoy for public workshops that are free and open to the public. Experience what the duo have learned from their work on “Harmonicum Accordion” on November 3, 10 and 17 from 7-9 p.m. For more information, visit www.inkub8.org.
